Bikram’s Beginning Yoga class is a sequence of 26 asanas (poses) and 2 breathing exercises selected and developed by Bikram from Hatha Yoga. It has been proven and experienced by millions worldwide that these 26 postures systematically work every part of the body, to give all the internal organs, veins, ligaments, and muscles everything they need to maintain optimum health and maximum function. In 90 minutes, the poses work systematically and cumulatively to return the body to a balanced state. The yoga builds energy, stamina and flexibility. It incorporates strength, challenge, gravity, balance, and most importantly the tourniquet effect. The Bikram technique allows the stretching, squeezing and massaging of the internal organs, flushing out the cardiovascular system and stimulating the endocrine and nervous systems in order to release any deficient hormones and enzymes. The body is self-regulating and self-adjusting.
Bikram Yoga is dynamic and exhilarating. The room is intentionally warm (105°F) to promote cellular metabolism, detoxification, and suppleness of the muscular system, at a great level of safety. The series works equally well for beginning and advanced students. You will be encouraged to challenge yourself to improve and maintain your health, your spine, and in turn your life.
Yogiraj Bikram Choudhury is the founder of the worldwide Yoga College of India TM. Born in Calcutta in 1946, Bikram began Yoga at the age of four with India’s most-renowned physical culturist at that time, Bishnu Ghosh, the younger brother of Paramahansa Yogananda (Author of the most popular book on Yoga, The Autobiography of a Yogi, and founder of the Self-Realization Fellowship in Los Angeles). At the age of 13, Bikram won the National India Yoga contest and remained undefeated for the following three years. At 17, an injury to his knee during a weightlifting accident brought the prediction from leading European doctors that he would never walk again. Not accepting their pronouncement, he had himself carried back to Bishnu Ghosh’s school, for he knew that if anyone could help to heal his knee, it was his teacher. Six months later, his knee had totally recovered. Ghosh was the first to scientifically document Yoga’s ability to cure chronic ailments and heal the body. Bikram brought his system to the United States in 1973 at the invitation of the American Medical Association.
